Kerala: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday rolled out a series of development initiatives in Kerala, signalling a strong focus on infrastructure and public services as the state prepares for upcoming elections.

Modi arrived in the state capital Thiruvananthapuram in the morning and was received by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and senior officials. Following the reception, the Prime Minister took part in a road procession before heading to the programme venue.

This marked Modi first visit to Kerala after the Bharatiya Janata Party made significant gains in recent local body elections by securing control of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, ending decades of Left dominance in the civic body.

Among the key announcements was the launch of four new train services aimed at improving regional connectivity. Three of these are Amrit Bharat Express trains designed to reduce travel time and strengthen links between Kerala and neighbouring southern states.

The newly flagged off services include Thiruvananthapuram to Tambaram Amrit Bharat Express, Nagarcoil to Mangaluru Amrit Bharat Express, Thiruvananthapuram to Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express and the Thrissur to Guruvayur passenger train.

Focusing on financial inclusion, the Prime Minister also inaugurated the PM Svanidhi Credit Card scheme and a modern post office in Thiruvananthapuram. The credit card offers interest free revolving credit through UPI integration, providing quick liquidity to street vendors and encouraging digital payments.

During the event, loans under the PM Svanidhi scheme were distributed to beneficiaries including a large number of street vendors from across Kerala. Officials said over one lakh people are expected to benefit from the initiative in the state.

In the science and innovation sector, Modi laid the foundation stone for the CSIR NIIST Innovation Technology and Entrepreneurship Centre in Thiruvananthapuram. The centre will focus on life sciences, bio economy and the integration of traditional knowledge with modern technology.

The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for an advanced radiosurgery centre at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology. The facility is expected to strengthen tertiary healthcare and provide precise treatment for complex neurological conditions.

Additionally, Modi inaugurated the new Poojappura Head Post Office equipped with technology driven services offering postal banking insurance and digital facilities, aimed at improving citizen centric service delivery in the capital city.
