Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has found himself at the centre of a fresh controversy after an FIR was registered against him in Bengaluru, drawing attention from film circles and the public alike.
The case relates to allegations that the actor mocked a sacred ritual portrayed in the Kannada blockbuster Kantara during a stage appearance. The ritual, known as Daiva Kola, holds deep spiritual and cultural significance, especially among the Tulu community.
The incident reportedly took place during the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India 2025 held in Goa. Ranveer Singh and Kantara actor Rishab Shetty were present at the event.
During the programme, Ranveer was seen recreating the expressions and movements associated with Rishab Shetty’s character from the film. While some viewed it as admiration, others felt it crossed a cultural line.
The act triggered strong reactions, with several groups accusing the actor of making light of a sacred tradition. The criticism intensified over time, leading to legal action.
A Bengaluru based advocate, Prashanth Methal, filed a private complaint stating that the performance hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus and particularly the Tulu community.
After hearing the petition, a Bengaluru magistrate court directed the police to register a case. Following the order, High Grounds police filed an FIR against Ranveer Singh.
The development has once again highlighted the sensitivity surrounding cultural representations and the responsibility public figures carry while engaging with traditional practices.
