Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and sitting Manipur MLA Vungzagin Valte passed away on Saturday at the age of 61 after battling severe health complications for an extended period. He represented the Thanlon Assembly constituency and was regarded as a key political voice in the hill districts.
Valte had been undergoing treatment since suffering critical head injuries during violent unrest in Manipur in May 2023. The attack occurred in the early days of clashes between Meitei and Kuki communities, when he was assaulted by a mob on the streets of Imphal while returning after meeting the chief minister.
Family members had alleged that activists linked to Arambai Tenggol were responsible for the assault. Following the incident, Valte remained partially paralysed and confined to a wheelchair, spending nearly a thousand days fighting for recovery.
Condolences poured in from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party paid tribute, remembering Valte as a committed public servant whose career was cut short by violence.
