The Election Commission is preparing to announce the election schedule for the upcoming assembly elections in five regions across the country. Officials indicated that the schedule for West Bengal Tamil Nadu Kerala Assam and the Union Territory of Puducherry is likely to be revealed later today as preparations for the electoral process reach completion.
The terms of the legislative assemblies in these regions are scheduled to end between May and June. With this timeline in mind the Election Commission has been planning to conduct the elections during April so that the democratic transition can take place smoothly before the existing assemblies complete their tenure.
Before announcing the election schedule the commission reviewed election arrangements in all the concerned states and the Union Territory. Officials examined polling infrastructure security arrangements and administrative readiness to ensure the voting process is conducted without disruption.
The final voter list in West Bengal was released on February 28 and the deadline to file appeals regarding the list will end on March 15. According to official data around 6.4 crore voters are registered in the state. In Assam Tamil Nadu Kerala and Puducherry the deadline for appeals related to voter lists has already concluded.
Political activity in these regions has intensified even before the formal election schedule announcement. Several parties have begun extensive campaigning and are focusing on reaching voters through rallies public meetings and development promises.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been actively touring different regions particularly in Assam where he recently launched several major infrastructure projects. Initiatives such as the Shillong Silchar corridor and other development works have been highlighted as part of the government development agenda ahead of the elections.
With preparations nearly complete the Election Commission is expected to officially release the election schedule soon which will mark the beginning of the next major democratic exercise in the country.
