In a major relief measure for millions of beneficiaries, the central government has decided to distribute three months of free ration at once to eligible ration cardholders. The decision will cover April May and June 2026 under the PMGKAY scheme.
The move is aimed at reducing the burden on people during the peak summer season. With forecasts warning of intense heat, authorities want to avoid repeated visits to ration shops and long waiting times. By providing supplies in one go, the government hopes to make access easier and more convenient for beneficiaries.
Officials have already issued directions to states to lift food grains from central stocks and ensure timely distribution. The Centre has emphasized quick action so that beneficiaries receive their share without delays.
Another key reason behind the decision is the large quantity of food grains currently stored in FCI warehouses. With stocks exceeding capacity and the arrival of the new rabi crop expected soon, the government is looking to clear space efficiently by distributing excess grain.
At the same time, the Centre has intensified efforts to eliminate fake ration cards. Through digital reforms and Aadhaar linkage, authorities are identifying ineligible beneficiaries and removing duplicate entries to ensure that the benefits reach the right people.
The initiative reflects a combined approach of welfare support and efficient resource management, offering both relief to households and better utilization of food grain reserves.
