The long standing demand to confer the Bharat Ratna on legendary leader N. T. Rama Rao has once again come into focus after a candid claim by his wife Lakshmi Parvathi. In a recent interaction, she revealed what she believes is the key reason behind the award not being granted so far.
Lakshmi Parvathi said she made several efforts over the years to secure the country’s highest civilian honour for NTR. She recalled meeting multiple Prime Ministers and Presidents in Delhi, urging them to consider the recognition for his contribution to Telugu pride and national politics.
According to her, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the only leader who spoke openly about the issue. She claimed that Vajpayee told her directly that her presence was the main reason the award had not been conferred.
She alleged that certain members of the NTR family were not willing to accept the Bharat Ratna if it were to be received by her, which ultimately became a hurdle. Despite her continuous efforts, she said the matter never moved forward.
Highlighting NTR’s legacy, Lakshmi Parvathi described him as a leader who transformed regional politics and gave a strong voice to Telugu identity. She noted that his role extended beyond the state, including efforts to build a national alternative through coalition politics.
Over the years, the demand for Bharat Ratna for NTR has been raised repeatedly by political leaders and family members. However, despite changing governments at the Centre, the recognition has remained elusive.
Her remarks have once again stirred debate around the issue, bringing attention back to the legacy of NTR and the ongoing demand to honour his contributions at the national level.
