New Delhi, March 18: The central government has introduced new guidelines for airlines, offering relief to passengers by restricting additional charges on seat selection and strengthening passenger rights during air travel.

Under the revised rules, airlines have been directed not to impose extra charges on at least sixty percent of seats on any flight. The move comes after growing complaints from passengers over high fees being charged for preferred seats such as window, aisle, and extra legroom options.

Authorities noted that pricing based on seat location had led to concerns about unfair practices, with only a limited number of seats available without additional cost. The new guidelines aim to ensure a more balanced and transparent pricing system for travelers.

The government has also instructed airlines to make efforts to seat passengers traveling under the same booking together, especially families. This is expected to reduce inconvenience and avoid conflicts that often arise when passengers are assigned separate seats.

In addition, airlines have been asked to clearly display passenger rights related to delays, cancellations, and denied boarding across their websites, mobile applications, and airport counters. Transparency in policies regarding baggage, including sports equipment, musical instruments, and pets, has also been emphasized.

Officials have warned that strict action will be taken against airlines that fail to comply with the new regulations. The guidelines are part of a broader effort to improve customer experience and address recurring complaints from air travelers.
