Health Alert on Expired Eggs as Experts Warn of Hidden Risks
Doctors caution that consuming expired eggs may lead to infections digestive issues and food poisoning urging people to check freshness carefully and avoid ignoring expiry details in daily food habits

A growing number of health experts are raising concerns about the risks of consuming expired eggs, warning that a common kitchen staple can quickly turn harmful if not handled properly. While eggs are widely valued for their high protein content, their safety depends heavily on freshness.
In recent discussions around food safety, authorities in Uttar Pradesh have even pushed for clearer labeling, directing sellers to display expiry dates on egg supplies. The move comes after increasing awareness about the dangers linked to spoiled food items and the need for better consumer information.
Nutritionists say the biggest threat from expired eggs is the risk of Food poisoning, often caused by bacteria such as Salmonella. Once eggs go bad, these bacteria can multiply rapidly, leading to symptoms that may appear within hours. Common signs include vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, and fever.
Apart from acute illness, spoiled eggs can also affect the digestive system. When eggs lose freshness, their protein structure begins to break down, making digestion more difficult. This can result in discomfort such as gas, heaviness, and irritation in the gut. Health experts warn that repeated consumption of such food may gradually impact immunity and overall gut health.
Despite these risks, many people still believe eggs do not require strict expiry checks. Doctors argue that this assumption can be dangerous, especially in today’s fast paced lifestyle where food storage conditions are often overlooked.
To reduce risk, experts recommend simple methods to test egg freshness at home. One widely suggested technique is the water test. Fresh eggs typically sink in water, while older or spoiled ones tend to float and should be discarded. Another clear indicator is smell. If an egg emits an unusual or foul odor after cracking, it is best not to consume it.
Dietitian Dr Geetika Chopra advises that being cautious with everyday food items can prevent unnecessary health complications. She emphasizes that while eggs remain an important source of nutrition, ignoring their quality can turn them into a health hazard.
With food safety becoming an increasing concern, experts stress the importance of checking expiry dates and using fresh ingredients. A small step in the kitchen, they say, can go a long way in protecting overall health.
