Tensions escalated in Telangana as former minister Harish Rao was placed under house arrest in Hyderabad on Tuesday morning. Police deployed heavy security outside his residence to prevent him from leaving for a planned visit to farmers protesting against land acquisition for an industrial park.
Harish Rao was scheduled to travel to Kallapur village in Parigi mandal of Vikarabad district, where farmers have been opposing the proposed industrial park. The protestors have been demanding that their lands should not be taken away, and the former minister intended to express solidarity with them.
Authorities, however, imposed strict restrictions on political leaders, particularly from the BRS party, to avoid escalation of the situation. Police blocked Harish Rao’s movement, citing concerns over law and order in the protest affected region.
Along with Harish Rao, several other leaders were also detained or placed under house arrest. Former minister Sabitha Indra Reddy and multiple leaders from the erstwhile Rangareddy district were restricted from participating in the protest. In a related action, former Parigi MLA Koppula Mahesh Reddy was taken into custody and shifted to a police station. Another BRS leader Shubhaprad Patel was also detained.
The developments highlight the growing friction between protesting farmers and authorities over land acquisition for industrial development. While the government aims to push forward with infrastructure projects, opposition leaders and local farmers continue to raise concerns about displacement and loss of livelihoods.
