India has recorded a steady improvement in maternal health, with the number of maternal deaths showing a noticeable decline across the country. Recent data released by the Registrar General of India indicates that the maternal mortality rate has dropped from 93 to 88 per one lakh live births.

Health experts attribute this positive trend to better access to healthcare services, improved medical infrastructure, and timely support for pregnant women. Government initiatives focusing on maternal care and nutrition are also playing a crucial role in saving lives.

Among the states, Andhra Pradesh has emerged as a strong example of progress. The state has significantly reduced its maternal mortality rate from 46 to 30, reflecting improvements in hospital care and maternal support systems. States like Kerala and Tamil Nadu continue to perform well, maintaining lower mortality rates through consistent healthcare delivery.

However, not all regions are witnessing similar gains. Telangana has reported a rise in maternal mortality, increasing from 45 in the 2019 to 2021 period to 59 in recent estimates. This trend has raised concern among health officials, who are now focusing on identifying gaps in maternal healthcare services.

Experts point out that rural and remote areas require stronger medical outreach, better facilities, and timely intervention to prevent complications during pregnancy. Other states such as Odisha and Madhya Pradesh also continue to report higher mortality rates, indicating the need for sustained efforts.

While the overall national picture reflects progress, the variation between states highlights the importance of targeted strategies. Strengthening healthcare access and ensuring consistent maternal support remain key to further reducing maternal mortality in India.
