A private hospital in Telangana has been directed to pay compensation after a patient reportedly suffered serious health complications following an incorrect blood transfusion during treatment.
The Khammam District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ruled against Jayabharathi Diagnostics and Multi Speciality Hospital in Bhadrachalam, holding the management responsible for negligence in handling a patient’s medical tests and treatment procedures.
The incident dates back to January 2023 when Kotturi Shantadevi from Dummugudem village in Bhadradri Kothagudem district met with a road accident and was admitted to the hospital with severe injuries.
During her treatment, doctors at the hospital allegedly determined her blood group as A positive and arranged a transfusion based on those reports. Shortly after the transfusion, her health condition reportedly became critical, raising concerns among family members.
She was later shifted to another private hospital in Khammam for advanced treatment. Fresh medical examinations conducted there reportedly revealed that her actual blood group was O positive, contradicting the earlier diagnosis made at the Bhadrachalam hospital.
Doctors treating her at the second hospital reportedly carried out multiple dialysis sessions to stabilise her condition. Family members claimed that the incorrect transfusion caused major complications and nearly endangered her life.
Following the incident, the victim approached the district consumer commission seeking legal action against the hospital management for medical negligence.
After reviewing the evidence, medical reports and arguments presented by both sides, the commission concluded that the hospital failed to follow proper medical procedures while identifying the patient’s blood group.
Commission President Vadlamannati Lalitha and member Addepalli Madhavilatha ordered the hospital to pay Rs.1 lakh as compensation to the victim along with Rs.25,000 towards litigation expenses.
