A tragic incident in the United States has once again raised concerns among Indian communities abroad after an Indian origin woman was shot dead during an alleged robbery attempt at a supermarket in Virginia. The shocking incident has left family members and local residents in grief.
The victim has been identified as 45 year old Meghnaben Patel, originally from Gujarat. Reports said she had been working at the same supermarket for nearly a decade and was known as a dedicated employee. Her sudden death has deeply affected people who knew her and members of the Indian community in the area.
Investigators said the attack happened while the supermarket had very few people inside. According to reports, an unidentified man entered the store with his face covered and walked directly toward the cash counter where Meghnaben was on duty.
CCTV footage from inside the store reportedly captured the entire sequence of events. The suspect was seen speaking briefly before suddenly taking out a firearm and opening fire. Meghnaben collapsed behind the counter after being hit by bullets.
Authorities said the attacker then allegedly crossed over the counter area before fleeing from the location. People nearby rushed toward the store after hearing gunshots and immediately informed emergency services.
Medical teams reached the scene and later confirmed Meghnaben’s death. Police registered a case and launched an investigation while collecting surveillance footage and other evidence to identify the suspect.
The victim belonged to Jantral village in Gujarat’s Mehsana district. Her parents continue to live there and news of her death reportedly brought deep sorrow to the village. Meghnaben is survived by her husband Upendrabhai Patel along with a daughter and son.
Family members said she had spent years building a life in America and was working hard to create a better future for her children. The heartbreaking incident has now left her loved ones mourning an unimaginable loss.
