According to food safety specialists, many apples available commercially are coated with an artificial wax layer. This coating is used to improve appearance and extend shelf life during transport and storage. Although it makes apples look fresh and glossy, the wax can trap harmful chemicals and residues on the fruit surface.
Doctors warn that consuming apples without removing this wax layer may affect digestion over time. When these substances enter the body, they can irritate the digestive system and may contribute to long term health issues if exposure continues regularly. This is why experts advise against eating apples straight from the market.
One widely recommended method to remove wax is using vinegar water. By adding a tablespoon of vinegar to a bowl of water and soaking apples for about five minutes, the acidic nature of vinegar helps break down the wax coating effectively. After soaking, the fruit should be rinsed with clean water.
Another simple approach involves warm water cleaning. Placing apples in slightly warm water for two to three minutes can soften the wax layer. Once removed, wiping the fruit firmly with a clean cotton cloth helps lift off the melted residue from the surface.
Salt water treatment is also considered useful. Mixing a teaspoon of salt in lukewarm water and soaking apples for around ten minutes can help dissolve wax while also reducing surface germs. This method is commonly used in households due to its simplicity and low cost.
For deeper cleaning, experts suggest a baking soda and lemon solution. When apples are soaked in a mixture of water, baking soda and lemon juice for ten minutes, it helps eliminate wax along with certain chemical residues. A final rinse with fresh water makes the fruit safer to consume.
