Typically, losing around 50 to 100 strands a day is natural, as new hair continues to grow. However, when the loss goes beyond this range, it may require medical attention.
Several underlying conditions are linked to increased hair fall. One of the most common causes is Thyroid Disorders, where hormonal imbalance weakens hair roots and leads to faster shedding. Similarly, Anemia or low iron levels can deprive hair follicles of essential nutrients, resulting in fragile and thinning hair.
Hormonal conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome also play a major role, particularly in women. In addition, prolonged stress can disrupt the hair growth cycle, pushing more hair into the shedding phase. This explains why people going through emotional or physical strain often notice sudden hair loss.
Lifestyle habits can further worsen the condition. Frequent use of chemical based hair products, excessive styling, or tightly tying hair can weaken roots over time. People with poor nutrition, especially low intake of protein and essential vitamins, are also at higher risk.
Experts suggest that prevention begins with simple changes. A balanced diet rich in iron, protein and vitamins can support stronger hair growth. Managing stress through relaxation techniques and ensuring adequate sleep are equally important. Gentle hair care practices can also help reduce unnecessary damage.
