The concern mainly revolves around papain a powerful enzyme found in papaya. Papain helps break down proteins and supports digestion but it can interact dangerously with certain medications. Health specialists warn that when combined with blood thinning drugs papain may increase the risk of internal bleeding.

Heart patients are among those advised to be cautious. Papaya may influence heart rate and blood circulation. For people already dealing with heart rhythm issues or taking anticoagulant medicines even small dietary changes can create complications. Doctors often recommend avoiding papaya unless a physician approves it.

Pregnant women are another high risk group. Unripe or partially ripe papaya contains higher levels of latex and papain.
