In today’s digital era, prolonged exposure to smartphones, computers, and televisions has become a major concern for eye health. Increasingly, young adults are finding themselves dependent on corrective lenses, and many are experiencing blurred or strained vision at an early age. Experts emphasize that protecting eyesight requires a combination of lifestyle adjustments, proper nutrition, and targeted eye exercises.

One of the most effective methods for reducing screen-related eye strain is the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes of screen use, look away at an object at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This simple habit relaxes eye muscles, prevents fatigue, and minimizes dryness.

Screen positioning also plays a key role in maintaining visual comfort. Devices should be placed about an arm’s length away, with the screen slightly below eye level. Adequate lighting in the room is essential, avoiding extremes of darkness or brightness to reduce strain.

Blinking frequently is another critical practice. Many people blink less when using screens, which can lead to dry and irritated eyes. Consciously blinking more often keeps the eyes moist and reduces discomfort.

Adequate sleep and hydration are equally important. Adults should aim for seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Lack of rest can lead to eye dryness, redness, and blurred vision. Drinking eight to ten glasses of water daily prevents dehydration, which can exacerbate eye strain.

Protecting eyes from harmful UV rays is also essential. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection while outdoors reduces the risk of cataracts and retinal damage over time.

Nutrition supports long-term eye health as well. Key nutrients include vitamin A from carrots and papaya, lutein and zinc from leafy greens and seeds, omega-3 fatty acids from fish and walnuts, and vitamin C from citrus fruits like oranges and lemons.

Finally, eye exercises can relieve tension and improve focus. Rapidly blinking ten to fifteen times, rotating the eyes clockwise and then counterclockwise, and alternating focus between near and distant objects help maintain flexibility in eye muscles and improve overall comfort.
