Many people enjoy eating sour foods during dinner or late at night, especially during mango season when raw mango dishes become a favorite in many homes. However, health experts now say that this common habit may quietly affect digestion, sleep quality, and overall health more than people realize.

For generations, elders in many households advised avoiding sour foods after sunset. While some dismissed it as an old belief, nutritionists and Ayurvedic experts now explain that there may actually be scientific and health related reasons behind the advice.

According to health specialists, sour foods naturally contain acidic properties that can disturb the stomach’s balance when consumed late in the evening. Eating such foods close to bedtime may increase acid levels in the stomach, leading to problems like acidity, heartburn, bloating, and acid reflux. These symptoms often become more noticeable when a person lies down soon after eating.

Experts say the body’s digestive process slows down during the night compared to daytime. Since metabolism becomes less active after sunset, the stomach may struggle to process highly acidic or heavy foods efficiently.
