Anchor gets interim protection from arrest

New Delhi, July 8 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Friday granted interim protection from arrest to Zee News anchor Rohit Ranjan in multiple FIRs lodged at Jaipur, Raipur and Noida for allegedly running a doctored video of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. A two-judge vacation Bench headed by Justice Indira Banerjee and also comprising Justice J K Maheshwari passed the order. The court also issued notice to the Centre and others on Rohit Ranjan’s plea for quashing cases or clubbing them into one.
According to the prosecution, there are multiple FIRs against Rohit Ranjan in connection with a fake news that was broadcast on July 1. The court directed the authorities not to take coercive steps against him or take him into custody. Rohit Ranjan moved the Supreme Court seeking its direction for quashing the cases registered against him and or clubbing them into one.
