Australia may have exited the T20 World Cup at the league stage but they ensured a strong finish with a one sided win in their final group encounter. In a Group C clash played on Friday at the Pallekele Stadium in Sri Lanka the former champions outclassed Oman by nine wickets to end the tournament on a positive note.
Asked to bat first Oman struggled against Australia’s disciplined bowling attack and were bowled out for just 104 runs in 16.2 overs. Only a handful of batters managed double digit scores with Wasim Ali top scoring with 32 while Jatinder Singh Karan Sonawale and Hammad Mirza offered brief resistance. The rest of the lineup collapsed quickly under sustained pressure.
Australia’s bowlers dominated the contest from the start. Adam Zampa led the charge with four wickets dismantling the middle order. Glenn Maxwell and Xavier Bartlett picked up two wickets each while Marcus Stoinis and Nathan Ellis chipped in with one apiece to keep Oman on the back foot throughout the innings.
Chasing a modest target Australia made light work of the task finishing the match in just 9.4 overs. Captain Mitchell Marsh anchored the chase with an unbeaten 66 displaying clean striking and calm control. Travis Head provided an explosive start scoring 32 off just 19 balls before falling. Josh Inglis then partnered Marsh to seal the win without any further trouble.
The emphatic victory allowed Australia to regain some pride after an early tournament exit and served as a reminder of their depth and firepower. Oman despite the loss gained valuable experience on the global stage against one of cricket’s strongest sides.
