New Customs Rules Make iPhone and Laptop Imports from US Cheaper

Travellers returning from the United States now have a strong reason to shop for gadgets as India has rolled out relaxed customs rules that significantly reduce the cost of bringing electronics from abroad. The changes came into effect on February two and are already creating excitement among frequent flyers.

Under the revised rules the duty free allowance for passengers arriving in India by air or sea has been increased from fifty thousand rupees to seventy five thousand rupees. This means personal items including smartphones brought within this value attract no customs duty at all.

For buyers of Apple products this comes as major relief since iPhones are usually priced much lower in the US. If the value of goods exceeds seventy five thousand rupees travellers now need to pay only ten percent customs duty along with ten percent social welfare surcharge on the excess amount. Earlier the duty alone stood at twenty percent making imports far more expensive.

Another key change benefits laptop buyers. Any passenger aged eighteen years or above can now bring one laptop or notebook completely duty free. Importantly the laptop value will not be counted under the seventy five thousand rupees exemption allowing travellers to carry both a laptop and other electronics without extra tax burden.

However officials clarified that these relaxations apply only to personal use items. Bringing multiple sealed boxes of the same product could raise suspicion of commercial intent. Items like flat screen televisions and gold biscuits remain excluded from duty free benefits.

Travellers are advised to keep purchase bills handy and declare items honestly at customs. Overall the updated rules have made overseas gadget shopping simpler and far more economical especially for smartphone and laptop enthusiasts.
