- Cab and bike taxi users advised to plan ahead.
Commuters across India are being advised to plan ahead as app based ride services are expected to come to a halt on February seven following a nationwide strike call by gig workers driving for Uber Ola and Rapido.
The strike is likely to impact not only major metro cities but also smaller towns and semi rural areas where app based transport has become a key travel option. With drivers staying off the road, passengers may face significant inconvenience throughout the day.
Gig workers say the protest stems from long standing issues that remain unaddressed. Their demands include the introduction of minimum base fares a transparent and fair pricing system regulated working hours and basic social security benefits.
Drivers have also expressed frustration over rising operational costs shrinking earnings and the absence of financial protection. They allege that unregulated work conditions and policy neglect have pushed many into economic distress despite the growing profits of aggregator platforms.
According to the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union, the objective of the strike is to draw the attention of governments to the daily struggles faced by app based drivers. The union said the protest is being organised with support from multiple national labour organisations.
Union leaders confirmed that an all India breakdown will be observed during the strike. They also revealed that a formal representation has been submitted to Nitin Gadkari, urging immediate intervention. If authorities fail to respond, drivers have warned that the agitation could intensify in the coming days.
