India produced a competitive total despite repeated setbacks in their opening match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, riding on a captain’s knock from Suryakumar Yadav at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Facing the United States national cricket team, India closed their innings at 161 for nine after a fluctuating 20 overs.

Walking in amid early pressure, Suryakumar held the innings together with a fluent 84, mixing control with aggression as wickets kept falling around him. Useful support came from Tilak Varma who made 25 and Ishan Kishan who chipped in with 20, but the rest of the batting lineup struggled to convert starts into meaningful contributions.

The USA bowling attack impressed with discipline and pace variations. Sclalkwyk led the charge with four wickets, while Harmeet Singh picked up two. Ali Khan and Mohammed Mohsin struck at crucial moments to keep India from accelerating in the death overs.

With Jasprit Bumrah absent, the responsibility now shifts to Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh to defend the total. Dew is expected to play a role in the second innings, making execution under lights a demanding task as the USA begin their chase of 162.
