Opposition stages Yalkout over appointment in Kannur University

Date:

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 25: Opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) on Wednesday staged a walkout from the Kerala Assembly in protest against the denial of an adjournment motion over the appointment of Priya Varghese, wife of chief minister’s private secretary KK Ragesh, as an associate professor in the Malayalam Language in the Kannur University. Opposition leader VD Satheesan said the Government violated all the rules for the back door appointments of CPI(M) cadres and their relatives in the Universities which were transformed into party offices.

Alleging that the Left Government was supporting Sangh Parivar agenda to implement it in the University syllabus, he said the books of Golwalkar, Savarkar, and Deendayal Upadhyay were included in the MA courses as part of supporting soft Hindutva. He said the Board of Studies has been non-existent at the University of Calicut for two years due to non-approval by the Governor.

He said 68 persons without basic qualifications were appointed as teachers and the question paper was repeated from the previous year in their appointment process.

Responding to the issues, Higher Education Minister Dr. R Bindu claimed that Priya Varghese was appointed to the University by abiding by all the academic norms.

As Speaker MB Rajesh denied permission to move the adjournment motion, the Opposition members staged the walkout.
