Prof Rupam Borgohain, Chairman of Parkinson’s disease and Movement disorders Citi Neuro centre welcomed Prof Jens Volkmann from Germany and Prof Stephen Chabardes from France, world leaders in deep brain stimulation (brain pacemakers) for movement disorders. Deep brain stimulation is placement of electrodes in the depths of the brain (specialised areas) and is done for various neurological diseases – movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, tremors, psychiatric disorders, epilepsy etc. The procedure is done by a team of specialised Neurologists and Neurosurgeons. A sizeable number of patients (30-350/1lakh population) in India are suffering from movement disorders. The brain pacemakers help them to lead better and functional lives.
The team of Movement disorders specialists including Prof Rupam Borgohain, Dr Rukmini Mridula K, Dr Rajesh Alugolu, Dr Prasad VVSRK, Dr Upendra KR and others, is one of the biggest team in India with an experience of more than 600 cases of DBS for various movement disorders, research, fellowship, PhD training and proctorship at various institutes across the country in the area of movement disorders. The team has performed more than 24 cases in the last two months at Citi Neuro centre (ages ranging from 11 years to 82 years). The developments in this field are increasing. Directional leads was launched today. These will improve the accuracy of current delivered with ability to steer current for fine tuning process
