A day after the Supreme Court upheld ten per cent quota for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and ruling DMK President M.K.Stalin has called for a meeting of all Legislature Party leaders on October 12 to discuss the next course of action on the issue. An official release on Tuesday said the meeting will be held at the Namakkal Kavignar Maaligai at the State Secretariat at 1030 hrs on that day.
Since this quota went against upholding social justice and equality and against the policy of social justice, a meeting of leaders of all legislature parties has been convened on October 12 to discuss and decide on the next course of action.
The release said the Chief Minister has sent letters to the leaders of all the Legislature Parties inviting them for the meeting. It said two representatives from each party are allowed to participate in the meeting.
Yesterday, reacting to the Supreme Court’s split verdict upholding the 10% reservation for EWS, Stalin termed it as a setback to the century-old struggle to uphold social justice.
He said the DMK has been leading the legal battle against the Legislation enacted by the union government in 2019 providing 10% reservation to EWS among the forward castes on the principle that it would be against the principle of social justice and equality. “The verdict delivered in the case today can only be considered as a setback to the century-old struggle to uphold social justice,” he said.
“The next course of action to carry forward our fight against the 10% EWS reservation will be decided after after studying the full verdict and in consultation with the legal experts,” the Chief Minister said. Stalin also appealed to all like-minded forces to come together so that the social justice slogan reverberated strongly across the nation.
The Supreme Court by a majority view of 3:2 upheld the validity of the 103rd Constitution amendment providing 10 per cent reservation for people belonging to the EWS in admissions and government jobs.
