Telangana state code on vehicle registration plates is TG now

Date:

The Telangana government on Thursday notified that the vehicle registration initials in the state have been changed from the previous TS to TG.

The state code TG now replaces TS for Telangana vehicle registration plates, the government said following the publication of the notification in the Gazette of India Extraordinary issue for the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section(6) of section 41 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 (59 of 1958), the Central government hereby makes the amendment,” the Gazette notification read.

On formation of Telangana state on June 2, 2014, the then TRS government decided the state code to be TS. However, the Congress party which came to power in December 2023 decided to change the state code to mark its own grasp over the administration. The new government stated that TS was not as per the established coding system in the country.

The Telangana State Road Transport Authority already started registering vehicles with TG code ever since the GO was issued in March this year.

“The registration number plates of vehicles in Telangana henceforth will bear the state code as TG replacing TS. As per the notification, the registration mark on vehicles for states and Union Territories, under serial number 29-A, TS stands amended as TG. This change aims to enhance regulatory clarity and effectiveness. The change comes into effect immediately,” the government said.
