In a fresh move to strengthen women’s economic independence, the Telangana government has decided to introduce electric buses for women self help groups in Hyderabad. The initiative is expected to open new income avenues for urban women while supporting sustainable transport.

District In charge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the programme has already shown positive results in rural areas, where women groups successfully generated additional income by operating buses. Encouraged by the outcome, the government is now extending the model to the city.

During the first phase, electric buses will be allotted to nearly 40 to 50 women self help groups across different localities of Hyderabad. Officials said the buses will be handed over to the groups for operations, helping them build long term financial stability.

The announcement was made during a review meeting held at the GHMC head office. Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi and Deputy Mayor Methe Srilatha Reddy participated along with zonal commissioners, deputy commissioners and senior officials.

Officials presented updates on ongoing city development works through a detailed presentation. Projects including H City, SNDP and SRDP were reviewed, along with departmental performance and future plans.

Authorities informed that Hyderabad currently has over 72,000 women self help groups. The government aims to increase this number to one lakh by encouraging more economically weaker women to join organised groups.

Mayor Vijayalakshmi thanked officials and citizens for their cooperation throughout the council’s tenure, which is nearing completion. She stressed the importance of sustained coordination to ensure continuity in civic services.

GHMC Commissioner Karnan stated that sanitation monitoring responsibilities have been assigned to engineers to improve cleanliness standards across the city. He reiterated the goal of placing Hyderabad among the top clean cities in the country.

On the occasion, appointment letters under compassionate grounds were also distributed to 22 beneficiaries, marking another step toward social support and administrative welfare.
