A major political development unfolded in Tamil Nadu after the government led by TVK chief and Chief Minister Vijay cancelled the appointment of astrologer Radhan Pandit Vettrivel as Officer on Special Duty.
The decision came shortly after the government successfully faced a no confidence motion in the Assembly on Wednesday. Soon after the political victory, official orders were issued revoking the controversial appointment.
Radhan Pandit is widely known in Tamil Nadu as a popular astrologer who gained attention for making predictions about several political leaders. Supporters often claimed that many of his forecasts had turned accurate over the years, including predictions related to former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
He had also publicly stated in the past that Vijay would one day form the government in Tamil Nadu. After Vijay came to power, the astrologer was appointed as OSD, a role generally associated with political coordination and advisory responsibilities within the administration.
Apart from being personally close to Vijay, Radhan Pandit was also active in political discussions connected to TVK. He frequently appeared in television debates representing the party and was seen as one of the visible supporters of Vijay during the party’s rise.
However, the appointment soon triggered criticism from alliance partners within the TVK coalition. Leaders from parties such as MJK, DMDK, and VCK reportedly objected to giving such a key administrative role to an astrologer.
Opposition parties including the DMK also targeted the government over the decision, questioning the message it would send within the administration. Political circles witnessed intense debate after the issue gained public attention.
Facing increasing pressure from both allies and rivals, the Vijay government finally stepped back and cancelled the appointment. The move is now being viewed as an attempt to avoid friction within the ruling alliance and maintain political balance in the coalition government.
