New Aadhaar Rules Bring Easier Enrollment and Faster Updates Across India
UIDAI has revised Aadhaar enrollment and update rules by approving more documents, making the process simpler for children, transgender citizens, tenants, and people changing names after marriage or divorce.

The process of getting a new Aadhaar card or updating existing details has become easier after the Unique Identification Authority of India introduced fresh rules for document verification. The updated guidelines are aimed at reducing difficulties faced by people who earlier struggled due to limited document options. With the latest changes, more documents have now been accepted for enrollment and corrections, giving relief to millions of citizens across the country.
One of the biggest highlights of the new rules is the inclusion of additional categories of people who often faced complications during verification. Children staying in Child Care Institutions can now use certificates issued by District Child Protection Officers for Aadhaar enrollment. This change is expected to help many children who do not have access to regular identity documents. UIDAI has also officially recognized documents related to transgender individuals, making the enrollment process more inclusive than before.
People holding Overseas Citizen of India status will also have to follow revised verification rules. During Aadhaar enrollment, OCI card holders must now submit both a valid foreign passport and their OCI card for identity confirmation. Officials believe this will improve transparency and simplify authentication during registration.
The rules related to updating names in Aadhaar have also been relaxed. Passports will continue to remain one of the strongest documents because they include complete personal details such as full name, address, date of birth, and photograph. Apart from passports, documents like PAN cards, voter identity cards, driving licenses, and government issued identity cards can also be used for name correction or updates. For people changing names after marriage, marriage certificates issued by central or state governments will now be accepted as valid proof.
UIDAI has also made the process easier for individuals changing names after marriage or divorce. If a marriage certificate contains a photograph, it can directly serve as proof of identity, address, and relationship. In cases where the certificate does not include a photograph, applicants will have to provide an additional photo identity document carrying their previous name. This move is expected to reduce delays faced by newly married couples and divorced individuals while updating Aadhaar records.
For date of birth corrections, birth certificates remain the most important document. However, UIDAI has expanded the list of accepted proofs. Passports, Class 10 or Class 12 mark sheets, pension documents, physical PAN cards, and government issued identity cards mentioning the date of birth can also be used. The wider list is likely to help people who earlier struggled due to missing birth certificates.
Address updates have also become more flexible under the revised guidelines. Citizens can now use passports, bank passbooks, or recent bank statements as proof of residence. Utility bills such as electricity, water, and gas bills are also accepted, provided they are not older than three months. People living in rented homes can submit rent agreements along with police verification papers or notarized documents. In addition, voter ID cards, ration cards, and property tax receipts are also considered valid address proofs.
Officials have advised applicants to carefully check the latest UIDAI document list before visiting Aadhaar centers. Citizens are also being encouraged to carry original documents, provide active mobile numbers, and verify every detail before submission. Authorities have further warned people to complete enrollment or updates only through official Aadhaar centers to avoid fraud or unnecessary complications.
The revised Aadhaar rules are being seen as a major step toward making identity services more accessible and citizen friendly. By expanding the list of accepted documents and simplifying procedures for different groups, UIDAI is trying to ensure that fewer people face rejection or repeated visits during Aadhaar enrollment and updates.
