Google Introduces Smarter Android Security Features to Fight Scams and Phone Theft

Google has announced a major security upgrade for Android smartphone users during its Android Show 2026 event. With the upcoming Android 17 update, the company is preparing to introduce several AI powered tools designed to protect users from rising online scams, fake calls, fraud messages, and mobile theft. The new features are aimed at making Android devices safer and more reliable as cybercrime cases continue to grow rapidly.

One of the most talked about additions is the new system designed to identify fake banking calls. Fraudsters often pretend to be bank officials and trick users into sharing OTPs, UPI PINs, and confidential financial details. To stop these scams, Google is bringing a feature called Verified Financial Calls. Under this system, Android phones will be able to check whether a call claiming to come from a bank is genuine or suspicious. The phone can communicate with the official banking app in the background to verify the authenticity of the call. If the system detects anything suspicious, the device may automatically warn the user or even disconnect the call.

Google is also strengthening its protection against caller ID spoofing, a scam in which criminals display trusted company names or official numbers while making fraudulent calls. Banks will now be able to mark specific numbers as inbound only, meaning those numbers can only receive calls and cannot be used for outgoing communication. If scammers attempt to misuse such numbers for fake calls, Android 17 will quickly identify and flag the activity.

Apart from voice call scams, Android 17 will also focus heavily on detecting suspicious apps and harmful software. Google is improving its Live Threat Detection technology to closely monitor applications installed on the device. If an app secretly changes permissions, runs hidden activities in the background, or attempts to hide itself from users, the system will instantly send a security alert. The company believes this feature will help reduce the risk of fake APK installations, malware attacks, and spyware threats that have become increasingly common in recent years.

Text message and chat related frauds are also being targeted with the help of artificial intelligence. Android 17 will analyze suspicious SMS messages and chat notifications to detect fraud attempts involving fake links, OTP scams, or phishing tricks. Whenever the system notices unusual or risky content, users will receive a warning before interacting with the message. Google says the AI engine has been trained to identify patterns commonly used by scammers to deceive people.

The company is also placing strong attention on phone theft protection. New anti theft tools included in Android 17 are designed to stop stolen devices from being misused. A new feature called Mark as Lost will allow users to lock their phones using biometric security as soon as the device goes missing. Once activated, quick settings may become inaccessible, wireless features like Wi Fi and Bluetooth can be disabled, and adding a new network connection will become more difficult. These restrictions are expected to make it harder for thieves to gain access to personal information stored on the device.

Google confirmed that many of these security improvements will not remain limited to newly launched smartphones. Several features are expected to roll out gradually to older Android devices as well. This approach could benefit millions of existing Android users who are increasingly becoming targets of online fraud and identity theft.

The latest Android update reflects Google’s growing focus on digital safety and privacy. As online scams continue evolving with more advanced methods, technology companies are under pressure to provide stronger protection tools. With AI based fraud detection, app monitoring, and theft prevention features, Android 17 is expected to offer users a more secure mobile experience in the coming months.
