UCC Bill will not be introduced in ongoing winter session: Bommai

Date:

Belagavi, Dec 19 : Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday said a bill pertaining to Uniform Civil Code will not be introduced in the ongoing winter session of the state legislature.
The CM said that the government was seriously deliberating upon implementation of UCC in Karnataka. A decision will be taken after studying the Indian Constitution with regard to UCC and developments in various states.
Asked about BJP MLC N Ravi Kumar’s plans to introduce a private member bill to ban halal certification, Bommai said, “We will see when it comes up in the assembly. Private member bill has its own position. We will see what it is.” Kumar had shot off a letter to the Legislative Council Chairman seeking permission to introduce a private member’s bill to amend the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, to ban any private organisation from issuing certification of foods. On Maharashtra MP’s plans to visit Belagavi, Bommai said not only him, but also the government has restricted other four who wanted to visit. “We will not allow anyone to enter Karnataka illegally,” he said.
The ten-day-long winter session began in Belagavi by paying obituary to former deputy Speaker of Legislative Assembly Vishwanath Chandrashekar Mamani, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, and eight other former MLAs who passed away recently.
Bommai said the legislature session will discuss various issues to provide relief to the people. Speaking to reporters at the Sambra Airport before proceeding to Suvarna Vidhana Soudha , he said issues pertaining to this region need to be discussed and solutions to be found. “Several subjects have to be discussed in the next ten days. The session is being convened to enact a number of legislations,” he said.
