While young women/men are spending many hours in the world of technology, ordinary people like me and maybe others got an opportunity some basic tools beginning with computers, then laptops, mobile and so on. When we were struggling with typewriters where documents neither can be stored nor saved, the correction was much more difficult. Thanks to technology all of them are passe now. Same with mobiles, when getting and using the phone was a herculean task. Now unlike computers or laptops for good or bad is turning into a nuisance.
The urge to write on a subject is not my foray when I got to know about “ChatGPT” which is slowly buzzing around outside the tech filed. When I got to know a little more details about this chat board (or boot) and was asking youngsters, whether they have any idea about this new tool, most of them already know about this tool developed by Microsoft, which is also news for being in the list of large scale lay off. It is not until this morning I got a share from my former colleague that even Google has announced a similar tool aptly called “Bard” (or some people call “Apprecentise Bard”. Being a non “techie”, I got it confused with “The Bard” of Stanford Upon Avon.
ChatGPT and Bard which are now news all over have come out with a tool that seems to think for human beings like us to create materials that we are interested to create. This means I may be wrong to assume so as I have not yet tried to use it as of now, can probably write this piece just by typing what I want! It seems it has turned very popular among high school and college students who want to use this tool to find solutions or answers to problems.
On further reading and listening on ChatGPT was more raveling “In 1964, researchers at MIT university were working on a computer program and this was so ahead of its time that it would allow seamless communication between machine and humans. In 1966 they built ELIZA, an app that would set the foundation for all future chat-bots. Eliza was so impressive for keyword-enabled responses. The first time, the users felt that someone understood their input. It was followed by the development of many other processing bots in 1995, and 2001. These process has now matured as ChatGPT and Bard. Cohat GPT launched in November 2022 by Open AI is a device that responds to our requests. From writing articles, poems and it can even prepare notes, project reports, and so on. It seems it is a kind mimic of a human conversation that can even debug computer programs and so on.The Google Bard on seeing the challenge posed by Microsoft ChatGPT. Bard is an answer to ChatGPT based on their language model called LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Application. It looks now like a Chat war between these two tech giants, Where it will end, we need to wait and watch. Whether it would see the end of Google search and related tools Alexa and so on is too early to predict by a nontechie like me. But when I asked someone who is in the area of software development has this to say “all hype because it is new”. Another person in the field Voice over etc went on to add “On the one hand the teachers are struggling to make students think without machines and further added, “most efficient way to kill a civilization is to destroy its literature”.
I see these tools that are going to challenge our thinking and make our brains become a slave. Also, we need to be careful as parties are now offering freebies which include mobile, young voters shouldn’t get tempted by “free” ChatGPT, Bard. As someone way back in 1999 said while we continued to get addicted scrolling our devices, the government was slowly and quietly destroying democracy. Be aware of this danger. If Bard had to write a sonnet, he may rephrase “All the Gadgets that shine aren’t created by God”
