Are Indians giving up basic discipline at home or outside? I am not in any way questioning people’s right to enjoy their daily life either at home or outside, but can’t we enjoy life with some discipline? It seems the perception has spread among youngsters that disciplined people are boring. However, the parents who don’t maintain discipline at home are quick to blame the schools and teachers without realizing that they alone can’t be blamed for the lack of discipline. If we observe children in Nursery class, we can see them keeping their baskets/bags containing snacks, and water bottles in an orderly way but when they come back home they don’t follow the same as they see even adults when coming back from the market, work or somewhere else, they simply don’t both or rarely put it in a shoe rack. I have seen in many flats people spend a fortune to decorate their rooms with all modern gadgets and they even make huge and fancy shoe racks, but most of them keep their shoes/slippers outside.
In many high-rise buildings, they even shabbily hang their wet clothes wherever they want. Of what use of spending a fortune on giving a luxurious look but have not bothered think of fixing a proper wet cloth hanger for wet cloth. Many won’t bother spending money on items to show off and clutter their rooms but rarely keep their dustbin in place and clean. Surprisingly they don’t want the dustbin to look ugly inside the home so would use the corridor to keep the ugly and unclean dustbin. In many households, during festivals and other social functions, they follow the tradition of hanging flowers outside their main door. I am not against such tradition and it would really give divine look and also bring about some vibe. However, after the festivals or event, they don’t bother to remove the dry garlands for ages which sometimes lead to insects using them as their home. Surprisingly even some temples don’t make it a point to remove dry garlands and I am sure our shastras also might have fixed a certain number of days to keep them and then either replace or hang new garlands around the time next festival. Even in yoga and meditation centers where people go to disincline their mind and body, I have noticed people don’t follow discipline and they simply just casually push their slippers/shoes all over instead of keeping them in the stand provided in such places.
We seem to have not learned from the successful people in various fields, the success behind them is the artistic discipline they would have followed to achieve their goals. Imagine, if our armed forces were not trained to maintain discipline, what can happen to our national security? Quite often indiscipline has cost us dearly as arms and ammunition from outside When it comes to cooperation, some of those who have not given importance to maintaining some amount of discipline while conducting their business met with disaster for themselves, financial institutions, investors, and not least the staff. Classic cases are many if it was Satyam in the mid-2000s and not it is the turn of Adanis and many others in news. Discipline sometimes is not only tedious but if fail to change, in the long run, we may. Let’s remember American Entrepreneur Jim Rohn’s quote “Success Is Nothing More than a few disciplines practiced every day”. What I have outlined may look like mundane, but if we fail to follow these simple activities, it can lead not a waste of time and energy involving searching for it when something important is needed
