All Sri Lankan universities to reopen in September

Colombo: Sri Lanka’s University Grants Commission (UGC) on Tuesday announced that all the universities in the country will be reopened in September. The decision was made on Monday night during a meeting between UGC officials and vice-chancellors of universities, UGC Chairman Sa mpath Amaratunga said. Amaratunga said the universities were closed in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic and classes were being conducted online.

“The time has come to start lectures in person and to start extra-curricular activities. Students have been demanding to commence physical lectures,” he said.

Amaratunga said almost all students have received two doses of Covid vaccines, and vice-chancellors of universities also agreed that academic and extra-curricular activities can be held prior to the pandemic.

Students who are unable to attend lectures can continue to learn online, Amaratunga said
