Ahmedabad: A shocking late night incident in Ahmedabad has left a family devastated after a Congress MP relative accidentally shot his wife and later died by suicide, according to police officials investigating the case.

The man involved has been identified as Yashraj Singh Gohil, nephew of Gujarat Congress MP Shaktisinh Gohil. He was living with his family in a fifth floor apartment in the city. His wife Rajeshwari was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the incident occurred inside the bedroom when Yashraj was handling his licensed revolver. During that time, a bullet was accidentally discharged and struck Rajeshwari on the back of her head, causing fatal injuries.

After the incident, Yashraj reportedly informed family members and asked them to call for medical help. An emergency ambulance reached the apartment, but doctors declared Rajeshwari dead on arrival.

Family members told the police that Yashraj was deeply shaken after hearing the confirmation of his wife death. A short while later, a gunshot was heard again from the bedroom.

When relatives and ambulance staff rushed inside, they found Yashraj lying in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to his head. He was declared dead at the spot, police said.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Jitendra Brahmbhatt stated that the case appears to be an accidental firing followed by suicide. Investigators are examining the scene and recording statements of family members to confirm the sequence of events.

Yashraj was thirty five years old and worked as a Class One officer with the Gujarat Maritime Board. He had married Rajeshwari, aged thirty, in November last year. Police have not reported any signs of prior dispute and the investigation is continuing.
