Chhattisgarh: Residents of a remote area in Chhattisgarh woke up to an unbelievable sight when a large iron bridge they had used just hours earlier completely disappeared overnight. The incident took place in Korba district and has left both locals and authorities struggling to comprehend the scale of the theft.

The missing bridge was a sixty foot iron structure built nearly four decades ago to connect two villages. Locals said vehicles were using the bridge as usual on Saturday night, but by Sunday morning there was no trace of it, not even remnants of its pillars or beams.

Police said the bridge weighed nearly thirty tonnes and was systematically dismantled by the thieves using gas cutters. The operation appeared well planned, with structural pillars and metal components cut and removed in the dark without drawing attention.

Officials revealed that the bridge was linked to a water pipeline through a forty foot beam, which was also cut during the theft. Fortunately the pipeline itself was not damaged, preventing a potential water supply disruption and offering some relief to authorities.

Investigators suspect the involvement of organised scrap dealers due to the scale and precision of the theft. Several scrap traders have been questioned so far, but police said no concrete leads had emerged as of Friday.

The incident has raised serious concerns about infrastructure safety in rural areas. Police have stepped up surveillance and assured villagers that efforts are underway to identify those responsible for the unprecedented bridge theft.
