- Anil Agarwal says world views India mainly as market
- Domestic production key for jobs and self reliance
- Simplified licensing needed to boost oil gas exploration
Chairman of Vedanta Group, Anil Agarwal, has sparked debate by stating that the world does not want India to emerge as a producer but prefers to see it remain a large consumer market.
In a public statement Agarwal said only domestic production can generate large scale employment and ensure long term self reliance. He pointed out that India has already demonstrated this shift in the past by moving from food import dependence to self sufficiency.
Highlighting the energy sector Agarwal said India currently imports nearly ninety percent of its oil and gas needs making the country vulnerable to global supply disruptions. With rising demand expected for at least the next two decades he argued that boosting domestic output is unavoidable.
He said India is rich in natural resources and holds an estimated three hundred billion barrels of oil reserves far exceeding the capacity of several emerging producers. He added that Indian professionals account for a significant share of global expertise in the oil and gas industry underscoring the availability of talent.
Drawing parallels with the United States Agarwal recalled how America reduced its import dependence by opening exploration to entrepreneurs and encouraging private participation. He said exploration is the core driver of the sector and India must unlock it aggressively.
Agarwal claimed India can produce oil at nearly half the cost of imports if regulatory bottlenecks are addressed. He expressed concern over complex procedures frequent notices court cases and fear of licence cancellations which discourage investors.
Calling for simplified licensing and a stable policy framework Agarwal said, India needs a strong national push towards production driven growth to secure jobs, economic strength and true self reliance.
