  • Banking and transport services may face disruption.
  • Essential services remain open during Bharat Bandh.

A nationwide Bharat Bandh has been called for February 12, raising concerns about possible disruptions to daily life. Ten major trade unions along with farmer organisations have jointly announced the strike to protest against the new labour codes and the recent India US trade deal.

Trade unions allege that the four new labour codes replacing 29 existing labour laws weaken workers rights and give more control to employers. Farmer groups have also joined the protest, claiming that the India US trade deal could adversely impact domestic agriculture and dairy sectors. Organisations such as the Samyukt Kisan Morcha have extended support, intensifying the scale of the Bharat Bandh.

Banking services are likely to witness partial disruption, especially in public sector banks, as major unions including AIBEA and BEFI are participating in the strike. While the Reserve Bank has not declared a holiday, in branch transactions may be affected in certain areas. However, online banking services and ATMs are expected to function normally.

Transport services could also face hurdles. In several states, RTC buses, auto drivers and taxi unions have expressed support for the Bharat Bandh. Road blockades and delays in public transport may occur in some regions, potentially affecting commuters.

Government offices might operate with reduced attendance if employee unions actively participate. In certain cities, local markets and commercial establishments may shut down depending on the intensity of the bandh.

At the same time, essential services have been kept out of the protest. Hospitals, ambulance services and medical shops are expected to operate without interruption. Power supply and water services will continue as usual. Airports and railway services are scheduled to run normally, though passengers may face difficulties reaching stations or terminals due to transport disruptions.

No nationwide closure has been announced for schools and colleges, but some states may take local decisions based on the situation. Students and parents are advised to check with their respective institutions.

With the Bharat Bandh likely to impact select services, citizens planning travel or banking transactions are advised to make necessary arrangements in advance or rely on digital services wherever possible.
