Telangana Gears Up for MPTC and ZPTC Elections as Government Pushes Fast Track Plan

The Telangana government is preparing to conduct pending MPTC and ZPTC elections in a single phase, with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy set to review schedules amid exams and budget sessions.

  • Elections likely in a single phase.
  • Process may finish within 20 days.
  • Final call after CM review meeting.

The Telangana government is moving closer to holding long pending Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency elections across the state. A crucial review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy with senior officials is expected to bring clarity on the election timeline and process.

With momentum gained from the recently concluded municipal elections, the government is keen to complete the MPTC and ZPTC polls swiftly. Officials are working on a plan to conduct polling in a single phase and wrap up the entire exercise within 15 to 20 days. The idea is to reduce administrative strain and allow the government to shift focus back to governance and development.

A key point of discussion in the meeting will be the coordination of election dates with the academic calendar and the upcoming budget session of the Assembly. Intermediate examinations are scheduled from February 28 to March 19, while Class 10 exams will be held between March 11 and April 2. In addition, the state budget session is expected to begin in the second week of March.

Officials from the education department and election machinery will present feasibility reports to ensure polling does not disrupt examinations. Based on these inputs, the government will decide whether elections can be held immediately or postponed until exams conclude.

Telangana has 538 ZPTC seats and 5,817 MPTC seats, all currently under administrative control following the completion of previous terms. The government aims to fill these positions at the earliest, as elected local bodies are essential to access pending funds of over 500 crore rupees under the Fifteenth Finance Commission.
