Iran has entered a new political chapter after Mojtaba Khamenei assumed the role of Iran Supreme Leader following recent developments in the country. International reports indicate that the decision was taken by Iran senior religious authorities and the Assembly of Experts.

The leadership transition comes after the reported killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28 which created uncertainty within the Iranian political system. The appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei is being seen as an attempt to restore stability in the country.

Mojtaba Khamenei has long been regarded as an influential figure within Iran political circles. Although he has never held an official government position he has played an important role behind the scenes in shaping political strategies and decisions.

Reports also suggest that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps extended strong support to Mojtaba Khamenei during the leadership selection process. Their backing is considered significant in consolidating authority within the country power structure.

Until the leadership transition was finalised a temporary administrative committee led by President Masoud Pezeshkian managed government affairs. The arrangement was aimed at maintaining continuity while the country navigated the political uncertainty.

Observers believe that the rise of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran Supreme Leader could influence the nation political direction and its role in the broader West Asia region during a time of heightened geopolitical tensions.
