A major disruption is expected across Telangana as the food service sector prepares for a large scale shutdown due to the ongoing LPG shortage. Industry representatives warn that most restaurants and food outlets may stop operations in the coming days.
According to the Telangana State Hotel Association nearly ninety percent of hotels restaurants and food stalls in the state could shut down soon because of the gas shortage. Association treasurer S Ram Murthy said many establishments currently have LPG reserves that will last only for the next two days.
The shortage of LPG has been linked to disruptions in global supply chains following rising tensions in West Asia. The situation intensified after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz which is a crucial route for oil and gas shipments reaching several countries including India.
India imports a significant portion of LPG from Gulf countries and the ongoing conflict has affected transportation and supply routes. As a result the central government has temporarily restricted the distribution of commercial gas cylinders while prioritizing domestic household supplies.
This decision has had a direct impact on the food industry particularly in cities like Hyderabad where restaurants depend heavily on commercial LPG cylinders for cooking operations.
Large hotels may still have some backup supply but smaller and medium sized restaurants usually maintain gas reserves that last only between twenty four and forty eight hours. Industry leaders say that if the supply situation does not improve within two days many establishments will have no option but to close temporarily.
The crisis could also affect hostels across the city where thousands of students and workers depend on daily meals. Some hostels have already stopped serving tea coffee and additional food items to conserve limited gas supplies.
If the shortage continues for about a week hostel operators say they may have to suspend food services or even shut down facilities until the situation stabilizes.
The economic impact of the crisis could extend beyond restaurants and hostels. Thousands of employees working in hotels as well as food delivery workers who depend on daily orders may face temporary loss of income.
Industry representatives note that even a medium sized hotel in Hyderabad supports hundreds of workers directly and indirectly. With the Telangana hotels close due to gas shortage situation escalating many sectors connected to the food business may experience serious challenges in the coming days.
