Virat Kohli delivered a stunning performance in the opening match of IPL 2026, guiding Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a commanding win and rewriting record books in the process. Playing at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Kohli remained unbeaten on 69 off just 39 balls, showcasing his trademark consistency and aggression.
The chase looked challenging at first after Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a strong total of 202. However, Kohli along with Devdutt Padikkal ensured there was no pressure, building a solid 101 run opening partnership that set the tone for the match. Padikkal played a quickfire knock of 61, while Kohli stayed till the end to seal the victory with ease.
With this innings, Kohli achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first player in IPL history to cross 4000 runs while chasing. No other player has even reached the 3500 mark in such situations, highlighting Kohli’s unmatched dominance in run chases.
He also surpassed Rohit Sharma in another major record by scoring the most runs in chases at a single venue. Kohli’s tally at the Chinnaswamy Stadium now stands ahead, pushing past Rohit’s previous record at the Wankhede Stadium. This achievement further underlines Kohli’s incredible record at his home ground.
Adding to his list of achievements, this was Kohli’s 10th fifty plus score while chasing at the same venue, placing him alongside Rohit Sharma in this elite category. Across IPL history, Kohli continues to hold records for most runs, centuries and half centuries at a single stadium.
