Taking a strong stand against the growing concern of food adulteration, the Telangana government has announced plans to establish a dedicated mechanism to monitor and control food safety violations across the state. The move comes as part of a broader effort to safeguard public health and ensure accountability in the food industry.

Health Minister C Damodar Rajanarasimha said the government is considering strict legal measures, including invoking provisions of the Preventive Detention Act, against those involved in food adulteration. The announcement was made during a food safety awareness walkathon, where the minister highlighted the seriousness of the issue.

To strengthen enforcement, the government has already taken steps by appointing 24 new food inspectors and introducing five mobile food testing vehicles. These units are expected to conduct on the spot inspections and improve monitoring in different regions.

In addition, plans are underway to establish three regional food testing laboratories in Nizamabad Mahabubnagar and Hanumakonda. These facilities will enhance testing capacity and ensure quicker analysis of food samples.

Officials revealed that enforcement drives have been intensified, with joint inspections carried out by police and food safety teams. Around 11000 checks have been conducted over the past two years, indicating a focused approach toward tackling violations.

The minister pointed out that changing lifestyles and rapid urbanisation have contributed to unhealthy eating habits, leading to a rise in non communicable diseases. He also warned that consumption of adulterated food is causing digestive and other health related problems among people.

With over 1.41 lakh food related establishments operating in the state, the government aims to promote responsible growth in the sector. While encouraging the food industry for its role in job creation, authorities have made it clear that strict standards must be followed to ensure consumer safety.

The proposed special mechanism is expected to bring tighter regulation, faster action, and improved awareness, helping to curb food adulteration and build trust among the public.
