A major water infrastructure proposal is taking shape along the Telangana and Karnataka border as both states begin discussions on constructing a new barrage across the Krishna River. The project is expected to provide long term relief for irrigation and drinking water needs while also improving transportation facilities for nearby regions.

The proposed barrage is planned between Kolpur village in Telangana and Korthkunda village in Karnataka. Officials are considering a storage capacity of around two TMC and estimates suggest that the project may require an investment of nearly Rs 500 crore.

The project is expected to benefit several villages in Makthal constituency by improving water availability for agriculture and daily consumption. Authorities believe that an additional bridge over the proposed barrage will also ease traffic pressure on existing routes and create smoother movement between border areas.

Apart from the Krishna River project, Telangana has also proposed another smaller barrage and bridge across the Bhima River between Thangadigi in Narayanpet district and Suguru village in Karnataka. The proposed structure is expected to have a storage capacity of around 0.25 TMC and could support farmers and local communities on both sides.

Discussions are also focused on a joint investment model where both states may share project costs and benefits equally. Officials believe this approach could strengthen cooperation and provide long term advantages for both regions.

To move the proposal forward, both governments have decided to establish a joint committee of irrigation engineers. The committee will examine technical details including hydrology studies, submergence areas and overall feasibility of the projects.

The team is expected to conduct field inspections and prepare a detailed report before state ministers and senior officials take a final decision on the project.
