The Telangana government is set to roll out a large scale soil health volunteers system aimed at strengthening sustainable agriculture and improving soil quality across the state. Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao announced that around 30000 volunteers will be deployed, with three assigned to each revenue village.

The initiative focuses on protecting soil fertility while guiding farmers toward environmentally friendly practices. These volunteers will work closely with farmers to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and encourage organic alternatives, ensuring long term productivity and healthier crops.

Training for the first batch of volunteers has already begun, starting from Kodangal constituency. The program is being conducted jointly by the state agriculture department and the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi Arid Tropics, where selected candidates are receiving practical and scientific guidance.

Speaking at the training launch, the minister emphasized the importance of maintaining soil health to produce nutritious crops. He advised farmers to adopt green manure crops and natural methods to enrich soil fertility. He also urged them to avoid burning crop residue and instead use it as organic manure to improve land quality.

The volunteers will play a key role in educating farmers on preparing land for cultivation, managing soil nutrients, and achieving better yields with lower investment. The government aims to turn soil conservation into a statewide movement through this structured support system.

As part of broader agricultural outreach, the minister also called for active participation of farmers in upcoming farmer festivals scheduled in early May. These events are expected to create awareness and encourage adoption of improved farming practices across Telangana.
