  • Election 2026 witnesses strong voter turnout expectations amid political tensions

Voting for the 2026 Assembly elections is underway in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, setting the stage for a closely watched political battle in two influential states. Polling activity began early in the day, with security tightened and election officials monitoring the process closely.

In West Bengal, the first phase covers 152 out of the state’s 294 constituencies, spread across 16 districts. Key regions such as Nandigram and parts of north Bengal including Darjeeling, Siliguri, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar are part of this phase. Around 3.6 crore voters are expected to exercise their franchise today, making it one of the largest polling exercises in the country. The remaining constituencies will go to polls in the second phase scheduled later this month.

The contest in West Bengal has intensified due to the ongoing political tensions, particularly around the issue of voter list revisions. Both the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party are treating this election as a critical test of their political strength, leading to heightened campaigning and voter outreach efforts in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu is witnessing a multi-cornered fight that has added a fresh dimension to the electoral landscape. The ruling DMK is leading a coalition under the Secular Progressive Alliance, focusing its campaign on governance and welfare schemes often described as the Dravidian Model. The opposition alliance of AIADMK and the BJP has countered this narrative by promising a shift towards transparent and corruption free governance.

Adding to the dynamics of the Tamil Nadu election is the political entry of actor Vijay, whose participation has drawn public attention and could influence voter sentiment in select constituencies.

As polling continues in both states, voter turnout and ground level responses will play a decisive role in shaping the outcome of Election 2026. Authorities have urged citizens to participate actively and ensure a peaceful voting process across all regions.
