Farmers across the country may have reason to feel optimistic as weather experts indicate that the southwest monsoon could arrive earlier than usual this year. Despite the presence of El Nino conditions, the overall outlook suggests that rainfall patterns, especially in South India, will remain favourable.

The monsoon, which generally reaches Kerala around June 1, is now expected to make an early entry. Experts predict that it could touch the Andaman region by mid May, paving the way for an earlier spread across southern parts of India.

According to former Director General of the India Meteorological Department, K G Ramesh, El Nino may result in slightly below normal rainfall at the national level. However, its impact is likely to be stronger in northern regions, while South India is expected to receive comparatively better rains.

He also pointed out that the Indian Ocean Dipole plays an important role in influencing monsoon performance. If the current neutral phase turns positive, it could reduce the negative effects of El Nino and support a more balanced rainfall distribution.

Adding to this, the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts has projected that rainfall activity may begin in South India by the end of May. A detailed official forecast from the Indian Meteorological Department is expected soon, which will offer more clarity on the monsoon’s progress.

An early monsoon is likely to benefit agriculture activities, helping farmers begin their seasonal preparations with greater confidence and reducing uncertainty around crop planning.
