A sudden spell of intense rain turned tragic in Bengaluru on Wednesday evening, leaving seven people dead after a government hospital compound wall collapsed in the Shivajinagar area. The incident has raised serious concerns over infrastructure safety amid extreme weather conditions.
The wall of Bowring Hospital gave way during heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning, trapping several people nearby. Authorities confirmed that seven people lost their lives, including three children and two women, while at least 11 others sustained serious injuries and are undergoing treatment in the hospital.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the site soon after the incident and reviewed rescue operations. Officials stated that those injured were quickly pulled out from the debris and shifted to the intensive care unit for treatment.
Preliminary information suggests that most victims were street vendors operating near the hospital premises. With schools closed for summer holidays, some children were reportedly present with their families at the time of the incident.
The heavy rainfall, which continued for over an hour, caused widespread disruption across the city. Several areas witnessed waterlogging, while around 50 trees were uprooted, damaging vehicles and blocking roads. At the Banashankari Metro Station, rainwater entered the premises, flooding the ticket counter area and affecting commuters.
Local MLA Rizwan Arshad expressed shock over the incident and assured strict action against those responsible, noting that the collapsed wall was old. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar also reacted, stating that he would personally visit the location to assess the situation.
Emergency teams including police and fire personnel are continuing rescue and relief operations, as the city grapples with the aftermath of the sudden downpour.
