West Bengal politics witnessed fresh turbulence after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly rejected calls for her resignation and accused the BJP of manipulating election results in the state.
The political showdown intensified after the BJP secured a massive victory in the recent Assembly elections by winning 207 out of 294 seats. Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress suffered a major setback and managed to win only 80 seats.
Despite the defeat, Mamata Banerjee made it clear that she would not step down from the Chief Minister’s position. Addressing newly elected TMC legislators, she alleged that the BJP and the Election Commission worked together to influence the outcome of the elections.
The TMC chief claimed that nearly 100 seats were taken away from her party through unfair practices and accused the BJP of carrying out large scale rigging during the polling process. She said the party would challenge the election results legally and approach the Supreme Court seeking justice.
According to party insiders, Mamata Banerjee believes resigning now would amount to accepting what she described as an unfair electoral process. Senior TMC leaders reportedly advised her to continue in office while pursuing legal remedies against the election outcome.
Abhishek Banerjee also backed the party’s stand and stated that the leadership intends to continue fighting politically and legally against what they believe were irregularities in the elections.
Mamata Banerjee further challenged the Central government over repeated political pressure on her administration. She remarked that if the Centre wanted to take action, it could impose President’s Rule, but such a move should become part of official constitutional records.
The Chief Minister also indicated that her larger political focus remains national politics and strengthening the INDIA alliance against the BJP in future electoral battles.
The developments have triggered intense debate across West Bengal, with both BJP and TMC supporters reacting strongly to the escalating political confrontation in the state.
