Senior Congress leader V Hanumantha Rao has begun an indefinite hunger strike at his residence in Hyderabad, pressing for the implementation of a BC caste census across the country. He said the protest was launched after repeated appeals and letters sent to the Central government failed to receive any response.
VH stated that identifying the exact population of Backward Classes is essential for ensuring fair opportunities in education, employment, and political representation. According to him, true welfare and development of BC communities can happen only when their population data is officially recorded through the national census process.
The Congress veteran had earlier warned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should clarify the Centre’s stand on the BC caste census before visiting Hyderabad. However, with no response from the government before the deadline, he decided to intensify his protest through an indefinite fast.
Speaking during the protest, Hanumantha Rao said the movement is not linked to any political party and is aimed purely at protecting the rights and future of BC communities. He stressed that caste based population data would help governments frame policies based on actual representation and social needs.
The hunger strike has drawn attention in Telangana political circles, especially amid growing discussions on social justice and caste based representation in governance and welfare programs.
